Scholes and Van Der Sar played together at United for 6 years under Sir Alex Ferguson, between 2005-2011.

Speaking to Stadium Astro, this is what he said:

“Edwin van Der Sar would be perfect”.

“He’s done that job at Ajax, it was always a role he wanted. He’s been to university and studied for that role. The likes of Rio and Fletch are more consultancy, similar to me really, someone to ring up and say ‘what do you think of this player?’”

Scholes’s ringing endorsement of the Dutchman surely put him out of the convention for this job.

Former Man United players like Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher and even Scholes himself have been touted as possible candidates for such a position.

Manchester United’s lackluster transfer window has again raised questions about the club’s backroom staff. The decision making of the officials and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward are also under attack.

Scholes himself believes that Woodward does not have the knowledge required to succeed in the transfer window.

There have been many instances when the clamor to fire Woodward has caught too much steam.

Manchester United failed to sign any of their primary targets in the transfer window. Their high profile chase for Jadon Sancho came up empty-handed, they were unable to secure Sergio Reguilon, Gabriel and Ousmane Dembele.

United’s transfer policies were also slammed by former player Patrice Evra, who accused the club of not conducting the transfer business seriously.

This was reciprocated by Sevilla sporting director Monchi too.

United’s transfer failing show that the club needs to change its approach. Maybe, having a successful former player at the helm would be the way to go.

Edwin Van Der Sar has been the CEO of Ajax since 2016. He has been a crucial part of the Dutch giants’s rejuvenation to the top tier of European football.
