Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi will “flourish” under the stewardship of new manager Mikel Arteta, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England shot-stopper says that the Spanish coach could work wonders for the French 20-year-old after his return to the Gunners.

Arsenal confirmed on Friday that the 37-year-old had left Manchester City to take over the vacant manager’s post, sitting in the stands for Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Everton.

With the new boss having operated as a midfielder during his playing days, spending five years at Arsenal, Robinson says he could have a big impact on Guendouzi.

“I like Guendouzi as a player, he came into Arsenal very young and he still has a lot to learn,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He gets run off the ball a lot of the time but I do think he’s an outstanding talent and I do think he will flourish under Arteta’s stewardship.

“His ball retention is very good, his ability on the ball is good and I think Arteta can improve him. It was a position he played in and I think he could add a little bit more to his game.

“Arteta was a goal-scoring midfielder as well, he was a holding midfielder later on in his career but he was scoring goals from midfield early on.”

Guendouzi had been a mainstay of Unai Emery and Freddie Ljungberg this season, starting 15 Premier League games and playing 22 times across all competitions, but he was left on the bench in Sunday’s draw versus Everton.

The youngster has a total of 70 appearances under his belt for the Gunners but has only found the back of the net once.
