Sander Berge was one of Sheffield United‘s best performing players at the business end of the season, thriving in a more advanced midfield role under Paul Heckingbottom.

The 24-year-old certainly has the ability and physical profile to play in the Premier League again in the near future, but with his contract running until the summer of 2024 at Bramall Lane, the Blades are under no pressure to sell.

“So no, we don’t speak or talk about replacements because we don’t want that to happen.

“For me, it’s all about open and honest communication.”

It is unlikely that the attention around the Norwegian’s future will go away for the rest of the transfer window, but if the Blades can sell their 2022/23 promotion to him in pre-season, they put themselves in a strong position to retain one of the best attack-minded midfielders in the division.

Heckingbottom is always very straight-to-the-point with the media, and if he does not want to sell a player, that is what he will come out and say, regardless of how likely it is that they remain at the club during that window.

Given his performances last season and the two years left on his deal, £35 million is an astronomical transfer fee and will make clubs think twice about how they could spend their money more sensibly this summer.

Berge is unlikely to justify that price tag as his value decreases due to his contract situation in the future, so his place in the squad at Bramall Lane is likely to continue to be a topic of debate for the coming months.
