Paul Gascoigne is currently receiving treatment in hospital, according to his personal assistant, after the former England star was reportedly discovered semi-conscious in his Poole home.
The Sun reported that Gascoigne was initially taken to intensive care on Friday, before being transferred to an acute medical unit, where he is understood to be in a stable condition.
The 58-year-old was said to have been found by Steve Foster, Gascoigne’s long-time friend, assistant and driver.
“Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now,” Foster told the Sun.
He added that Gascoigne would “like to thank everyone for the support he’s received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best”.
Affectionately known as Gazza during his colourful playing career, Gascoigne is widely regarded as one of the most gifted and charismatic footballers England has produced in the last four decades.
He enjoyed spells at Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers, and earned 57 senior caps for the national team.
