Barcelona’s summer signing Pau Victor has revealed that one of the main reasons he decided to join the club was his feeling of being undervalued at his previous team, Girona.

It must be noted that before moving to Barcelona, Victor spent a loan spell at Sabadell for a year. It was only after Barça recognised his potential that a significant conversation took place.

“The key moment was when I spoke to Rafa Msrquez before signing with Barcelona. He gave me complete confidence and told me he had been following me all year and that I was the number 9 he needed. I didn’t hesitate,” said Victor as quoted by SPORT.

Following his stint at Barça Atletic, Victor was focused on playing for the main Barcelona team. Although he returned to Girona, his aim was always to join FC Barcelona’s first team. He shared,

“Barça called me and told me that they were starting negotiations with Girona. I also expressed my desire to come here, although it wasn’t just me, they had to negotiate.

“Girona didn’t give me the same confidence as the previous year and I didn’t feel fully appreciated either,” he recalled.

Speaking further, Victor praised Barcelona’s current coach, Hansi Flick, noting, “He is a person who is very close to the player. He seeks contact, to transmit that he is close. I have gone to speak with him twice and it has been great.

“He makes the footballer feel very comfortable. As a coach, he demands a lot, he wants a lot of intensity, and he likes the players not to slow down. That is what is being seen in the matches.”

Among his Barcelona teammates, Victor has been particularly impressed by Dani Olmo, saying,

He has surprised me a lot, he is a player with spectacular quality. He has a great vision of the game, is very calm, has a great ability to overcome opponents, is a good striker, and can score goals.”.

He also mentioned players he already knew from his time at Barça Atletic, such as Pedri and Raphinha, who he feels “support the younger players well“.

Additionally, he highlighted Inigo Martinez, noting, “It’s not so common to single him out when he’s a powerful centre-back, with good ball handling and quickness.”

As he returns to Girona, Victor holds no grudges and looks forward to catching up with his former colleagues, although he acknowledges that all personal feelings will be set aside once the match begins.
