Pau Torres was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2021. In the end, he left for Aston Villa in the Premier League and now, in an interview with Relevo, he has explained why he didn’t go to Madrid.

“I would never turn down a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona, you can never turn them down. There were talks but in the end, Madrid had a very good option, which was to bring in [David] Alaba on a free,” explained Torres, adding that “it’s very difficult to find that kind of player on a free.”

“It is a dream to win a title with Aston Villa. That would be the next dream. We are focused on that, to make Aston Villa a winning club and bring it back to where it deserves,” the Spanish defender continued.

On how he is adapting to life in England, he said “On a personal level, together with my wife, with Paula, we have left our city, because for her it has also been very difficult to have her parents five minutes away and now to be far away from them. She and I rely a lot on each other and it will also help us to grow in our relationship and as people. Being here in a different country, in a new culture, we have to try to adapt to this. She has a perfect command of English – in that she is ahead of me, although I am also fluent. Being 26 years old, having done a very good job previously at Villarreal, being able to return to the national team, being at another club where I start and being important within the team… I think it’s all good, and let’s hope that this continues.”
