RC Strasbourg Alsace manager Patrick Vieira has confirmed that Ângelo Gabriel (19) will not play again this season after the Chelsea loanee suffered a hernia injury.
“No, it’s settled,” was Vieira’s straight-forward response to a question about the chances of seeing Gabriel feature again this season. Whilst Strasbourg initially announced an absence of just one month when the Brazilian winger suffered the injury at the start of March, it became quickly evident that the problem was more serious than initially thought.
Towards the end of March, The Evening Standard reported that Gabriel had returned to parent club Chelsea in order to undergo treatment for the problem. He has been back at Cobham for some time, however, it is not certain that we have seen the last of Gabriel in a Strasbourg shirt.
According to L’Équipe, there is a chance that Gabriel will return for another loan spell with Les Alsaciens next season. The same hypothesis has been touted for Andrey Santos, who has flourished since breaking into the RCSA midfield at the end of February.
