Backed by 46,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, Sunderland managed to deliver the goods in this fixture as they outclassed their opponents.

Elliot Embleton opened the scoring for the Black Cats in the 12th minute as he fired an effort past David Stockdale from outside of the area.

Following the break, Anthony Patterson made a good stop to prevent Sam Vokes from levelling proceedings.

Ross Stewart then produced a fine finish to effectively secure victory for his side in the closing stages of this fixture.

Sunderland manager Alex Neil will now be looking to prepare the club for life in the second-tier over the coming months.

One of the decisions that Neil will need to make is whether to extend Roberts’ stay at the club as the 25-year-old’s deal is set to expire in June.

Reflecting on his side’s play-off success on Instagram, Roberts has admitted that it was a pleasure to play at Wembley for the Black Cats.

The Verdict

Saturday’s fixture turned out to be an unforgettable experience for Sunderland’s supporters as they finally managed to see their side secure a return to the Championship.

Roberts played a key role in helping his side book a trip to Wembley as he scored the decisive goal in their play-off semi-final showdown with Sheffield Wednesday.

Having produced three direct goal contributions for Sunderland since sealing a move to the club earlier this year, it will be interesting to see whether Roberts is handed the opportunity to prove his worth in the Championship.

During his career to date, the 25-year-old has scored two goals in the second-tier whilst he has also chipped in with six assists at this level in 51 appearances.
