Roberts has endured a difficult last few seasons as his contract at Manchester City ran down, but is looking as dangerous as ever under Alex Neil.

The Black Cats had edged the second leg on the balance of play even before Lee Gregory opened the scoring on the night, where Roberts’ defending came into question, with Jack Clarke and Alex Pritchard having huge influence in central areas, playing their way out of tight areas very effectively.

The weight of expectation will be enormous heading to Wembley Stadium against a Wycombe Wanderers side with positive memories of winning the League One play-offs in 2019/20.

The trio of Roberts, Clarke and Pritchard are set to be crucial once again in servicing the forward line and asking questions of the Chairboys’ defensive resolve.

If Sunderland are promoted, the Stadium of Light feels like the perfect destination for Roberts to kick on in his career, after years of stagnation, with his current contract expiring at the end of the campaign.

The ability has never been in question, and in Alex Neil he has a manager who is getting the best out of him, demonstrating that he should not be playing at this level.

Ross Stewart has scored four goals in two games against the Chairboys this season, with the Black Cats winning 3-1 at home and drawing 3-3 on their travels, though both matches were under Lee Johnson, and next Saturday’s final could mark the beginning of a long awaited recovery in the North East.
