Patrice Evra has revealed how a piece of chicken helped him sign for Manchester United in 2006.
Evra announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, leaving the game after 20 years and 21 trophies.
But the ex-defender has claimed that his career could have taken a different turn had it not been for a small piece of poultry.
âPeople talk about when we made the Champions League final in 2004, but the craziest part [of my career] at Monaco came after I had played a game for the French U21 team,â Evra told The Playersâ Tribune.
âAn opponent had stamped on my foot and damaged it badly. In hospital I told the Monaco coach, Didier Deschamps, âItâs too painful. I canât play. I canât even walk!â
âBut the team needed me, so the doctors tried everything to take away the pain. Nothing worked. Then someone from the club staff said, âWhy donât you just go old school?â
âEveryone said, âWhat do you mean?â
âHe said, âJust slide a chicken down his boot.â
âIt sounded crazy but, you know me, Iâm open minded. So I went to my local butcher. The butcher said, âWhat do you want?â
âI said, âA piece of chicken. But just a tiny one.â
âHe said, âA tiny one? How come?â
âI said, âIâm gonna put it in my boot.â
âHe just laughed. I went home with the chicken. I ordered new boots: one in size 42.5, the other in size 44. I passed the ball. [It] felt okay. Painful, but okay. So I ended up playing with chicken in my boot for four months. I didnât train with it â my mother would never have forgiven me for wasting food â but before every game I would visit the butcher. âMorning, Patrice. The usual, yeah?â
âThe chicken enabled me to play so well that, in January 2006, I was signed by Manchester United.â
