Adam Montgomery left Celtic to join Callum Davidson and his squad in Perthshire this week, after a great half-season last campaign in the hoops. His start to life under Ange Postecoglou was remarkable considering his very limited exposure to first-team regularity beforehand.

However, the manager’s faith in young Mongomery’s abilities were not in vain, as he fought hard to push Greg Taylor at left-back.

Seeing his obvious limitations at such an early age, whilst acknowledging the caveats of ‘too much, too soon’, Postecoglou sent Adam on-loan to Aberdeen in January this year after his successful breakthrough at the club. The move didn’t go as planned and the youngster was left on the sidelines most of the time, earning brief cameos here and there.

The situation regarding the Dons’ managerial upheaval didn’t help one iota for Adam, who must have been thinking what he’d done to deserve such a fate after that blistering start earlier in the season with Celtic. Not one to complain, the left-back got on with it and saw the mess out until the end of the League term.

Having the great mindset that it could be the making of him as a player and a person, Adam spoke yesterday of his desire to do well at St Johnstone and put his miserable loan spell up at Pittodrie behind him, with a new opportunity looming just ahead of him.

Now it was the turn of his temporary manager and coach, Callum Davidson to express his delight and gratitude at having a player of Montgomery’s talent at his club, and acknowledged the role each could play in helping one another achieve their goals next season. Speaking to Scottish Sun, the St Johnstone manager said: “I’m delighted to get Adam on board. He is a fantastic young prospect who has played in some big games for Celtic.

“Callum Booth and Tony Gallacher are both out for the foreseeable future so I felt we needed someone to come in to play on the left-hand side. Speaking to him I was really impressed with his hunger and desire to be playing football. “He’s had a taste of it playing at Celtic then with Aberdeen last season, although he spent some of his time up there injured.

“I think it’s good he was out on loan elsewhere, so he’s had a taste of life away from Celtic already and knows what it’s like moving from that environment to another club. I think he has got all the attributes to be successful here and then go back to Celtic a much better player.”
