Pascal Gastien under threat at Clermont

Clermont Foot are currently rock bottom of Ligue 1 and in a bid to stave off the drop for a third consecutive season, the club are considering the future of manager Pascal Gastien, according to L’Équipe.

Gastien has been at the club for nearly seven years, and last season, he architected a mid-table finish after showing great form in the second half of the Ligue 1 campaign. However, that form has not been carried into this season, with Clermont having already lost 14 games in Ligue 1. Clermont are the lowest scorers in the division, and their relative defensive solidity evaporated against Lille OSC during last weekend’s 4-0 defeat against Les Dogues.

Gastien to step down at the end of the season

That heavy defeat is leading Clermont to consider Gastien’s future and a departure is a possibility, report L’Équipe. Regardless of Clermont’s decision, it is expected that Gastien will step back from his managerial role at the end of the season. He is likely to be offered an advisory position by President Ahmet Schaefer.

Clermont have denied that Gastien’s position is under threat, whilst the relegation-threatened club are yet to sound out potential replacements. CF63 have a difficult run of games coming up: Stade Brestois, Stade Rennais, OGC Nice and Olympique de Marseille. The situation at Clermont could get worse before it gets any better.
