The Serie A Femminile will go fully professional in the next season, but Empoli will not be there to enjoy it. They have sold their license to Parma Calcio, who will take their place in Italy’s elite domestic league.

From Serie D to Serie A

Parma were promoted to the Serie C, but were given the opportunity to take over Empoli’s license and this is what owner Kyle Krause had to say about it: “Can I explain the reasons for the acquisition of a women’s Serie A team when Parma already has a team that has just been promoted to Serie C? This opportunity has presented itself to us to make the leap, and when an opportunity presents itself it must be seized.”

“If we look a bit around, the growth of women’s football is evident, just look close here as well as in Barcelona and at the incredible number of fans who have participated in the last two games and we are talking about 90,000 spectators. The real question is: why not also offer girls the same opportunities that are now offered to male colleagues to play at a high level?”

Parma: approval from the FIGC

Parma got the approval from the Italian football assocciation, FIGC. And will work on what the team needs to compete in the Serie A. Some players will come over from Empoli. But the owner emphasises that the transfermarket is very much open for them at the minute.

Empoli’s time is over

Empoli have played in the Serie A for four seasons. In that period they made it to two semi-finals in the Coppa Italia in the process. Now the adventure ends for the foreseeable future.

“I would like to say thank you,” said Rebecca Corsi, President of Empoli Femminile. “To all those who have contributed to the unique successes that have upheld the club’s history and tradition, both at youth and first-team level. Without these people it would not have been possible to achieve such results”.
