Barcelona need to generate a significant amount of money in the coming weeks if they are to return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule, and 1-2 sales could be enough to do this. One player that has been heavily speculated upon in regards to a possible departure is Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong’s situation is not clear, mainly due to his contract situation. Barcelona want to extend his stay beyond 2026, but with a significant salary reduction, which would also ease their financial woes. However, the Dutch midfielder is in no rush to renew, which has led to reports that he could be sold.
One of the clubs that has been monitoring de Jong is Paris Saint-Germain, although Sport have now reported that the Ligue 1 champions have not only cooled their interest, but pulled it altogether. The Parisians are focusing their efforts elsewhere, having deemed that the 26-year-old is no longer needed because of the impressive performances of Vitinha throughout the 2023-24 season.
It remains to be seen how Hansi Flick assesses de Jong’s situation. Given that Joshua Kimmich appears to be a top target of his, a sale could be on the cards, although right now, it is too soon to say what his Barcelona future holds.
