Greek side Panathinaikos have reportedly talked down Manchester United from €15 million to €6 million for winger Facundo Pellistri.

The Uruguay international only ever played 25 times for the United senior team and spent more time on loan at clubs like Granada and Alaves, as he failed to nail down a consistent spot in the team.

The Red Devils, in an effort to generate funds, have made it a priority this window to sell off players who are surplus to requirement and, as such, an agreement has been found with the Greek giants to sell the winger.

Despite the attempts of numerous clubs to hijack the deal, it was confirmed United had agreed a deal with Panathinaikos for €6 million.

Greek media Sport 24, have proclaimed this a great success for the Athens based club as the “truth is that the clover fought a great battle to obtain” the price they will pay for Pellistri.

“Manchester United was asking €12 to 15 million 20 days ago. However, Panathinaikos managed to close the deal for an amount of six million euros, while there are some goal achievement bonuses that have not yet been specified.”

Pellistri will sign his new deal shortly that will last until 2028 and he will be paid €1.6 million a year as part of his new contract. It also seems that the Uruguayan may get a chance to play in the side’s Conference League playoff game against Lens tomorrow.

Whilst it is undoubtedly a good price for someone with the international experience of Pellistri, the unmentioned add-ons are important to note.

If they are easy to obtain or sizeable then it could also be considered a victory for United.

What’s more, Manchester United will have 40-45% sell on clause for Facundo Pellistri after the deal with Panathinaikos, which once more is not mentioned in the Greek report.

Therefore, should Pellistri be successful in Greece and earn a big transfer to another club, the Red Devils stand to make a sizeable bit of cash from any future deal.

It is the latest example of United’s new leadership selling smarter as they included a buy back option in both Mason Greenwood and Willy Kambwala’s sales earlier in the window.
