Raffaele Palladino explains the big changes to the Fiorentina tactical shape for the Conference League clash with The New Saints. ‘We are starting with 4-2-3-1.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Artemio Franchi at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

There was genuine confusion over how exactly the Viola are set out for this match, as they seem to have shifted tactics again away from the three-man defence.

“We are starting with a 4-2-3-1, but can also move to three, as there is a bit of an emergency situation at the back,” Palladino told Sky Sport Italia.

There is certainly a shortage of defenders, as Marin Pongracic is injured, with Lucas Martinez Quarta, Luca Ranieri and Pietro Comuzzo all suspended.

“Matias Moreno is making his debut, Cristiano Biraghi is playing as a central defender and I thank him for his sacrifice in that. We can also go to three at the back, with Ikone dropping into the midfield.

“I think we have now reached the level of maturity that allows us to make tactical changes during the game.”

Fiorentina still finding their feet with Palladino

Palladino has stuttered so far in this new job, winning only one game, but also losing only once, between a series of stalemates. How can they rediscover their smile on the pitch?

“It comes through performances, results and the daily work we do in training. All I see from these lads is extraordinary, they deserve to celebrate this evening and that includes many players who haven’t had as many opportunities so far.”

Lucas Beltran would appear to be in a centre-forward role, although Palladino insists that is not the case.

“Beltran is working really well in training, he was used as a support striker on Sunday and in my view that is his ideal role. So today I put him in the right position where he can give his best,” explained the coach.

“I am not a magician, all I have to do is put the players in the best position to perform and I am sure we’ll see a great performance tonight.”
