Burnley finally struck an agreement with Manchester United and Besiktas last night for the service of Wout Weghorst, with the Dutch striker set to spend the remainder of the season at Old Trafford.
Weghorst struggled with Burnley last season in the Premier League, scoring two goals and registering three assists in 20 appearances, as the Clarets eventually slipped out of the top-flight.
However, since then, Weghorst has gone out on loan to Besiktas, scoring nine goals in 18 appearances, as well as adding a further four assists. He scored twice in four games for the Netherlands at the World Cup in Qatar, with his brace and free-kick routine against Argentina a highlight of the knockout stages.
Erik ten Hag has been convinced to bring him to Old Trafford on a temporary basis, plugging the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo following the termination of his contract.
Last night, Weghorst’s loan to Manchester was confirmed until the end of the season, with Alex Crook at talkSPORT able to offer further details.
He writes on Twitter that there’s a £2.6m loan fee being paid to Burnley and that Man United are covering the 30-year-old’s wages in full, albeit without an obligation to buy coming in the summer of 2023.
The Verdict
This is a good deal for Burnley to strike for Weghorst, with a tidy seven-figure windfall for his service and wages covered in full, for a player they don’t want or need at this time.
Whilst there will be another saga in the summer, it’s a bridge to cross when it comes to it.
We don’t know how Weghorst will get on at Old Trafford, whilst Burnley have promotion well in their sights and should be a Premier League club again next year.
Things could, realistically, look a lot different another six months down the line.
