Pachuca lifted a sixth CONCACAF Champions Cup on Saturday after a 3-0 win over Columbus Crew.
Scorers: Rondon 12′, 67′, Rodriguez 32′
It was men against boys in the 2024 final as Pachuca cruised past a dismal Columbus Crew.
The Estadio Hidalgo was an intimidating sight filled with home fans, and the MLS side didn’t look confident from the start. Meanwhile, Pachuca had a clear game plan.
Salomon Rondon opened the scoring after splitting two defenders and chipped goalkeeper Patrick Schulte from a tight angle only 12 minutes in.
The hosts doubled their lead in the blink of an eye only to see VAR pull the goal back. However, a shaky Crew continued to allow Pachuca to pull the strings and subsequently gifted them acres of space.
A wide-open Emilio Rodriguez eventually slammed home a second into the roof of the net beyond Schulte.
The visitors managed to swing possession in their favour, but failed to be creative in the second half despite the return of Cucho Hernandez. Instead, they were stunned and smothered.
The Crew had just three shots on target from 11. Pachuca, in comparison, had 23 shots total and the goals to show for it.
Rondon eventually put the match to bed by securing a brace when he swivelled in the box just after the hour mark.
The victory means Pachuca will play in the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
