Fourth-placed Chivas de Guadalajara traveled to Pachuca for Saturday night’s matchday 8 contest in Liga MX.
The Sacred Flock had been performing well in the Clausura 2019 and just soundly defeated local rivals Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío in their last league match.
Pachuca had not lost in four league games before hosting Chivas but even that form could not have predicted the dramatic score-line at the Hidalgo Stadium.
Former Pumas and Tigres winger Ismael Sosa opened the scoring for Los Tuzos in the 15th minute.
The 32-year-old Argentine-born attacker was assisted by Colombian play-maker Edwin Cardona on the game’s first goal.
Guadalajara responded in quick succession with a goal of their own. Isaác Brizuela fired home an equaliser in the 19th minute after a mad scramble near the Pachuca penalty area.
Shortly after the half-time intermission, Víctor Guzmán put Pachuca ahead again.
The 24-year-old Mexico international midfielder easily finished in the 48th minute after Chivas goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño pushed centre back Jair Pereira’s attempted clearance directly to him.
Premier League winner with Leicester City, Leonardo Ulloa came off the bench to add to Pachuca’s lead late in the match.
The Argentine forward scored on a cross from right-back Raúl López in the 79th minute to cushion the advantage for Los Tuzos.
The result means that the two teams now have identical records of 4-2-2 in the Clausura 2019 campaign.
The victory moves Pachuca up to 14 points after matchday 8 and keeps Los Tuzos unbeaten in five Liga MX matches.
Any positive energy generated from Guadalajara’s derby victory last weekend dissipated against Pachuca. The loss sees Chivas remain in fourth place in the Clausura table as they shift attention to Copa MX in mid-week.
