Cameron Brannagan set to snub West Brom and Blackburn Rovers to sign new Oxford United contract.
Cameron Brannagan is set to snub interest from West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers to sign a new three-year contract with Oxford United.
That is according to Football Insider, which states that the 28-year-old was the subject of interest from the Baggies and Blackburn Rovers, but the U’s have been able to secure his long-term future, as he is a key player under Des Buckingham.
Oxford are preparing for life in the Championship after an impressive campaign last season that saw them seal promotion via the play-offs, which probably wasn’t expected.
The U’s have got their preparations for the new season well underway, as they have brought in nine new players so far, which includes players such as Matt Ingram, Louie Sibley, and Peter Kioso.
But Oxford could have now received the best news of this transfer window, and that is that Brannagan is set to stay beyond this transfer window and commit his future to the club.
Brannagan has been with Oxford United since January 2018, when he joined the club from Liverpool.
The midfielder was relatively unknown when he joined, but in his six years at the club, he has been a vital member of their success.
That continued last season, as he was a key part of what Buckingham was able to do to get this team promoted to the second tier.
It was reported by Pete O’Rourke last week that both West Brom and Blackburn Rovers were plotting moves to sign the 28-year-old.
Now, according to Football Insider, Brannagan is set to ignore the interest from the duo and sign a new three-year contract with the U’s.
Brannagan had entered the final year of his contract at the club, but according to this report, Oxford have managed to fend off the interest and have secured his long-term future, as he’s seen as a key member of Des Buckingham’s side.
As previously stated, Brannagan has been with the U’s since January 2018, and in that time, he has played 290 games for the club in all competitions.
During that time, the midfielder has scored 54 goals and recorded 31 assists, as he’s proven to be vital for the club in key moments throughout the season.
Brannagan was very impressive once again last season, as he scored 12 goals and chipped in with nine assists in 43 league games. The midfielder also grabbed a goal in the play-offs, and that came in the vital second leg against Peterborough United.
The 2024/25 Championship campaign will see Brannagan play in the second tier for the first time in his professional career.
Any success Oxford United are going to have in terms of beating the drop was always going to depend on what happens with Brannagan.
If the U’s were to lose the midfielder, that would have been a serious dent to their survival hopes, as the 28-year-old has been so key for the club over a number of years now.
