Guro Bergsvand’s own goal handed Everton a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium this evening.

Karen Holmgaard headed Everton into the lead before Brighton & Hove Albion soon levelled matters through Tatiana Pinto. Bergsvand then put through her own net as the visitors recorded a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of 4,987.

The game’s first meaningful chance fell the way of Everton. Aurora Galli looked to run the ball up the right wing but she was prevented by Jorelyn Carabalí who was alert to the danger.

The Blue Girls went close to finding the opener when Kathrine Kühl found herself with space on the edge of the box, creating a low, driven shot which was tipped away by home keeper Sophie Baggaley.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s first chance of the game came from a deflected shot from Pinto which was gathered by Courtney Brosnan.

Both teams ended the first half in search of goals but neither were able to make a breakthrough as they went into the break deadlocked.

It was the hosts who had the better of the initial play in the second half. They created a few half-chances without really causing any trouble for Everton keeper Brosnan. Pinto’s cross found Maisie Symonds whose shot was deflected off target before Elisabeth Terland picked up the ball around 35 yards out but her effort dipped wide of the post.

The deadlock was eventually broken by Karen Holmgaard, who created an instant impact from the bench. She got on the end of a cross and nodded the ball into the net.

Brighton & Hove Albion looked to respond immediately with Symonds taking aim from a free-kick. Her effort deflected off the crossbar but Pinto was there to react and smash the ball home for the equaliser, just three minutes after the visitors had gone ahead.

Everton soon regained their lead when a mix up in the Brighton & Hove Albion defence resulted in Galli being brought down and Bergsvand putting the ball into her own net.

Brian Sørenson’s side ended the game 2-1 winners, meaning that they move up to ninth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, at least for the time being.

Both sides return to action next weekend. Brighton & Hove Albion travel to Tottenham Hotspur while Everton will play host to Arsenal.
