The German national team is preparing for the upcoming home European Championships, but one key player is not taking part: Leroy Sané has to stay in Munich. According to his own statements, however, the FCB star wants to use the time to prepare himself for the challenges ahead.

Unlike Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané was not booted out by national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the international matches against France and the Netherlands, but because of his red card against Austria in November 2023, the Bayern professional is not allowed to play for the DFB squad. The 28-year-old is suspended for three matches.

The ban hurts because Sané cannot present himself to the national coach. Nagelsmann has already shown in his most recent squad nominations that he does not take big names into consideration. The 36-year-old prioritises team success and team chemistry.

However, the break is also good news for Sané. He can now work on his fitness in peace and quiet in Munich. „Of course I would have loved to have been involved in the games against France and Holland. But I want to use the time now to be in top physical condition for the final spurt of the season,“ Sané told BILD. Instead of taking a holiday, Sané is devoting himself to rehab training. His groin in particular needs to be treated. This has been causing the winger problems for months.

Sané is not worried about the 2024 European Championship: „Of course I’m in good dialogue with the national team coach. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the team for the next two games and I’m really looking forward to a hopefully successful European Championship in the summer,“ he emphasised.
