BBC pundit Matthew Upson amazed by Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur’s solo run

BBC pundit and former England defender Matthew Upson has revealed that he was amazed by Tottenham Hotspur and Uruguay star Rodrigo Bentancur‘s unbelievable solo run in the first half against Portugal last night.

It was a sensational run from the Uruguayan midfielder who went straight through the heart of midfield getting past Portuguese players and it took an excellent save from Diogo Costa to prevent the Spurs man from scoring.

Ultimately, it was the Portuguese who won the game 2-0 in the end thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes. Uruguay really did not get many clear-cut chances and it was a poor performance from the South Americans.

Bentancur’s run actually arose due to the intelligent movement from Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez who took Pepe along with him which created all the space for the Spurs midfielder to exploit.

The Tottenham man had an impressive outing in midfield last night. Bentancur has 79 touches of the ball and played one key pass, won six out of his eight ground duels, made three interceptions and two tackles and also completed 100% of his two dribbles.

It was the kind of performance that showed how good Bentancur can be and we have seen it quite a few times in a Spurs shirt. Although the Uruguayan can be more consistent, his talent cannot be undermined.

Speaking about the run from the Spurs man, here is what Upson had to say about what he thinks should have led to a goal.

“Out of nowhere Rodrigo Bentancur has gone on an unbelievable run through the whole heart of the pitch. Darwin Nunez makes a great run that drags Pepe away, allowing him the space to get through one-on-one” “He worms his way through two players but Costa completely saves Portugal. he gets enough on it to slow the ball and stop it. That would have been some goal!”

Uruguay now find themselves in a very tricky position to qualify for the next round of the World Cup. They have to beat Ghana and also hope other results go their way to ensure progress to the next round.

Bentancur will be hoping to put in yet another impressive shift against the Africans as he looks to inspire his side to qualification and let’s all hope the Spurs midfielder can do just that.
