A disjointed and disappointing England were held to a goalless by the USA as Gareth Southgate’s side were booed off at full time.

Familiar failings

After the high of Iran, now comes the low of USA.

It took four days for England’s World Cup fever to dampen and boy did the USMNT throw a wet towel on it.

The Three Lions were atrocious on Friday, giving fans flashbacks of their 0-0 draw with Algeria in the 2010 World Cup.

And the similarities to that draw were there for everyone to see.

Lumping if forward with no purpose, struggling to complete even the simplest of pass, playing the 90 minutes at just one pace.

It was a snooze-fest and the England fans that booed at full time were well within their rights to make their feelings known.

The only thing missing was Emile Heskey doing stepovers and  Wayne Rooney shouting down the barrel of the camera.

Southgate you’re … done?

All this leaves Gareth Southgate with plenty of questions to answer.

The England boss went with an unchanged XI here but that surely has to change for their clash with Wales on Tuesday.

Where their attack looked fluent and firing on Monday, here it was stale and struggling.

Harry Kane was isolated up front, Bukayo Saka was running into dead ends and Raheem Sterling was almost non-existent.

And to top all of that off, Southgate left Phil Foden, arguably England’s most creative attacker, on the bench.

It was a baffling decision and will heap further pressure on the Three Lions boss with a must-draw clash with Wales next.

The Eagle has landed

The point seemed like a disaster for England.

For USA however, this was a draw that keeps their World Cup dream alive.

And they were good value for it.

At no point did the USMNT look under too much pressure and there was even a point midway through the first half when it seemed like they were set to score.

First Weston McKennie fired a close range effort over the bar and then Christian Pulisic smashed a shot back against the crossbar.

They paid for their lack of quality in attack but the Americans never seemed like they would concede and played out the game with the ease of a team well above their years.

Coach Gregg Bernthaler will be delighted with his young side.
