Our 3️⃣ points as Tottenham spoil Newcastle's party

Newcastle United’s new era began with a disappointing defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Here are three things we learned from the game.

Harry’s back

After the will-he-won’t-he summer and his poor start to the season, there had been lots of talk about whether Harry Kane’s heart was still in playing for Spurs, and maybe whether he’s already past his best.

But the England captain finally netted his first Premier League goal of the season in this game with a delightful lob, before assisting Heung-min Son for the third goal.

If Nuno Espirito Santo is going to be a success at Spurs he’s going to need his talisman back at the top of his game.

And if history has taught us anything about Kane, it’s that once he gets on a roll, it’s hard to stop him.

Expect the goals to start flowing freely now.

New era, same Newcastle

We could talk about the ethics and morality of Newcastle’s new ownership until the cows come home, but their supporters are entitled to be excited about the dawn of a new era for their club.

And when Callum Wilson nodded them in front after less than two minutes, it sounded like a decade of frustration was being released into the Tyneside air.

Unfortunately for the Geordie faithful, the following 88 minutes was a stark reminder of just how much work it’s going to take to untangle the mess created during Mike Ashley’s tenure.

Steve Bruce’s side were as poor as they’ve been all season and now he’s taken charge of 1,000th game as a manager, it will be interesting to see how much longer he lasts in the St James’ Park hotseat.

The new owners won’t be able to spend any of their money on new signings until January at the earliest and if drastic action isn’t taken soon, there’s a serious possibility they could be bankrolling a Championship club next season.

Crisis? What crisis?

Spurs seemed a little overawed by the atmosphere in the early stages of this match but they soon woke up and in the end, it was a solid performance and result (Eric Dier’s own goal notwithstanding).

Tanguy Ndombele took his goal well to get them back into the game, Emerson Royal is starting to look more comfortable at right-back, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are a sturdy midfield double-act and Cristian Romero is settling into English football nicely.

It was the end of the world when the Lilywhites lost at Arsenal a few weeks ago but they’ve won three games on the bounce since then and can go to the London Stadium feeling reasonably confident next weekend.

Nuno may not be the right man for the job long-term, but it’s still a little too early to say for sure.

One more thing

Everyone at OneFootball sends our best wishes to the supporter who was taken ill towards the end of the first half of this match.

And great credit is due to everyone involved in the incident, from the fans who alerted the players to what was going on, to the medical staff who rushed over with a defibrillator, to referee Andre Marriner for stopping the game and taking the teams back to the dressing rooms.

If you watch one thing today, make it this important and fascinating discussion about CPR with former Newcastle and Spurs star David Ginola.

It might just save a life.
