Four of the best

What a win that was for Eddie Howe and Newcastle.

The Magpies have endured a relatively tough time of it this season trying to mix Champions League football with domestic duties, extended expectations and an injury list as long as your arm.

But everything clicked into gear on Saturday as the hosts performed their game plan to the letter and inflicted Ange Postecoglou’s worst defeat as Spurs boss.

On Grand National day meanwhile, it’s fair to say that Spurs were just not at the races.

From minute one they looked like being vulnerable on the counter-attack and a Timo Werner effort aside, never really troubled the Newcastle goal.

Tottenham will have to explain this one down to an off day but with just six more games to go until the end of the season, they can’t afford to have any more if a place in the top four is what they’re after come May.

Micky van de Ven has undoubtedly been one of the stand-out players in the Premier League this season.

The Netherlands international joined Tottenham from Wolfsburg with a big reputation but has burnished it even more with a string of brilliant performances at the heart of the Spurs defence.

Sometimes though, it just isn’t your day and Saturday’s clash was one of those occasions.

Van de Ven was like a headless chicken in the first half, struggling – surely for the first time this campaign – with the pace of an opponent.

Anthony Gordon looked to have rattled the Dutchman with his speed and directness on the ball.

On the half hour, that come to a head as the England international laid in Alexander Isak, who breezed past Van de Ven with one touch and fired into the bottom corner.

It was time then for Spurs to regroup and try to find an equaliser but just 95 seconds later, they were 2-0 down.

Van de Van, once again, got caught on his heels as Gordon himself this time jinked around the defender and fired in from close range.

It was a truly nightmare 45 minutes from one of the division’s most consistent stars and shows just how tough the Premier League is for any player

Alexander Isak just loves playing at St James’ Park.

Not since the Alan Shearer days have the Magpies had a goalscorer so prolific in the north east.

Isak arrived on Tyneside last summer as a fairly middling marksman at Real Sociedad but one with a clearly incredibly high ceiling.

But right now, Isak is going beyond what anyone at Newcastle must surely have expected last year.

With his half an hour strike, Isak netted in his sixth-straight game at home whilst his second after the break made it 12 goals from his last 12 appearances at the cathedral of Tyneside football.

It’s a genuinely astonishing run of goalscoring form for a striker who could well be firing Eddie Howe’s side to an unlikely place in the top six come the end of the season.
