Mount is back

On a day when it’s tough to single anyone out given the overall quality of the team performance, Mason Mount is worthy of it, particularly after leaving with the match ball.

He’s came in for considerable criticism for his form to start the season and beforehand, even Thomas Tuchel drew attention to his dip, calling on him to find ‘solutions’ to step up in the absence of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

The academy product certainly did that, with a performance that was much more like it.

His sweet strike for the opener was as clean and accurate an effort as you’ll see anywhere and he provided a fine assist for Reece James’ goal too.

Mount relished the space he was afforded by Norwich, who were the perfect opponent for him to face in order to get his mojo back.

Even when it went wrong for him with his missed penalty, it showed how his fortunes have turned when he was allowed the chance to retake it and slammed in at the second attempt.

Chil out

Ben Chilwell’s incredible streak of scoring form continued with another sweet finish.

He has thrived under Tuchel of late after a somewhat difficult start to the German’s reign.

Although he had little to do defensively, it is notable that he managed to get back among the goals again as it saw him join some pretty prestigious company.

Granted, he was helped by Norwich failing to pick him up and allowing the ball to travel to him almost unchallenged but he still had to finish the chance – and he certainly did.

In doing so, he became the first Blue since Eden Hazard five years ago to score in four consecutive Premier League games.

It was also the first time since Frank Lampard in 2013 that an Englishman has managed it. Reminder: he is a defender.

No case for the defence

Former Norwich hero Darren Huckerby summed up the dismal display best with a frustrated social media post at half-time.

The Canaries were incapable of getting out of their own half for large spells – let alone troubling Edouard Mendy in the Chelsea goal.

In fact, Chilwell was their biggest attacking threat, providing them with their best chance following a poor back pass but Mendy was on hand to make a smart sliding block.

This was always going to be a tough game but the lack of focus and basic errors from the likes of Ozan Kabak for the first two and Dimitris Giannoulis, who was inexplicably caught ball-watching for the third, is just unacceptable.

Max Aarons’ own goal and Tim Krul’s resulting botched attempt to keep it out summed up another awful afternoon on the road for Norwich against one of the big boys. But this was perhaps the worst given their failures all over the field.

Surely the Chelsea coaching staff left wondering how on earth loanee Billy Gilmour has struggled to break into this side.
