Manchester City were at their ominous best on Sunday afternoon as they beat Manchester United 6-3 at the Etihad.

Hat-tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland saw Pep Guardiola’s side maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season and heaped more pressure on this United defence.

With Arsenal winning their derby on Saturday and going four points clear at the top of the table, pressure was on Manchester City to keep up their unbeaten record and go to within a point of the Gunners.

Pressure? What pressure?

This was about as easy a derby win as you’ll get with City strolling to a victory over a shell-shocked Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag’s side were bad (we’ll get to that later) but City were exceptional.

This was about as good as Jack Grealish has been since joining from Aston Villa last year. Phil Foden showed once again that he’s the most talented English player for a generation.

Kevin De Bruyne was, as always, stunning in the pocket behind Erling Haaland.

And then there was the Norwegian.

Haaland is simply making a mockery of the Premier League with his performances so far.

A goalscoring phenomenon who makes this side looks unbeatable.

Midfield mess

When the team news dropped an hour before kick off there was perhaps one surprise from the red half of Manchester.

They remained unchanged from their last Premier League game a month ago.

And that meant Scott McTominay started at the base of the midfield instead of the big-money man, Casemiro.

It seemed like a strange decision on paper and it looked even odder on the pitch.

United completely lost the midfield battle with De Bruyne waltzing through the game in third gear and no one getting anywhere near Bernardo Silva.

This match was over by half time but it wasn’t until the 54th minute that the Brazilian was introduced.

The old adage that you shouldn’t change a winning team holds some wait but surely this will be the last time that Casemiro starts on the bench in a Premier League game this season?

Hat-trick heaven

Manchester buses aren’t commonly compared to their London equivalents.

But much like the capital Routemaster, you wait around for ages a derby hat-trick and then two come along at once.

No City player had scored a hat-trick in the derby since Franny Lee in 1970 and only two had ever been scored for the Citizens in this fixture in the 187 previous occasions.

Then Erling Haaland and Phil Foden came along.

It was the hometown boy’s first ever senior hat-trick and was completed in the second half with a truly sumptuous curled finish past David De Gea.

Foden was excellent all afternoon as he shared goalscoring duties with Haaland on a brilliant afternoon for the blue side of Manchester.

Haaland in fact broke the record for most consecutive hat-tricks in the Premier League, scoring three for a third home game in a row.

He is, quite simply, the best striker in the world right now.
