Down but never out

Much has been made about Manchester City’s sticky patch in recent weeks.

Had the Blues failed to win at Goodison Park on Wednesday evening, their one win in seven would have been the worst stretch of games in Pep Guardiola’s managerial era.

But the comeback win against the Toffees brings City to within five points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, with a game in hand on Jürgen Klopp’s men as well.

Guardiola’s side have become familiar with deficits during the holiday season, regularly turning those deficits into fuel for a lengthy winning streak.

There are plenty of reasons why this may finally be the year that the City machine runs out of gas, but if the engine starts revving again, would any of us be shocked?

Everton should remain confident. Before playing Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, the Toffees had won four straight Premier League matches.

Subsequent losses to Tottenham and Manchester City should just be par for the course when it comes to the Toffees plight this season.

Despite the ten-point deduction for FFP breaches, Sean Dyche’s men are still one place above the relegation zone and should have plenty of confidence in staying up after their recent purple patch.

The fixtures remain tough for the Goodison gang, with Wolves and Aston Villa on the horizon, but having taken wins off of both Newcastle and Chelsea lately, Everton have proven they can upset the applecart.

When it matters

In the absence of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, a ‘superstar void’ was left gaping in the City team – enter Phil Foden.

The City academy product is proving to be more than bonus firepower in an already stacked City squad this season, sticking out above the rest as the man who will take baton.

When City needed a moment of magic most, Foden was there to leather a shot in past Jordan Pickford and set the Blues on their way.

If Pep Guardiola’s side are to get going once again and buzz their way towards a record fourth Premier League title, Foden may just be the unlikely catalyst.
