Not so Fab news

Liverpool have plunged headfirst into a defensive crisis.

Having already lost Virgil van Dijk for what will likely be the rest of the season, the Premier League champions were having to make do with defensive midfielder Fabinho at centre-back alongside Joe Gomez.

The Brazilian’s man-of-the-match performance against Ajax last week suggested the keys to the defence were in safe hands so it will be a crushing blow to Jürgen Klopp to see the 27-year-old limp off  with a suspected hamstring injury following a challenge tonight.

With Joël Matip proving to be injury-prone time and time again, it leaves Klopp with just Gomez to choose from, should the injury keep Fabinho out for a prolonged period of time.

Not an ideal situation to find themselves in, with Manchester City to come the week after next.

Deadly Diogo

Three goals in three appearances at Anfield. Diogo Jota loves scoring in front of the Kop.

The Portuguese forward has settled right into this Liverpool team and already looks like he may turn out to be an astute bit of business for Jürgen Klopp’s side.

In the way that Divock Origi appears to fit into the line-up like a square peg trying to squeeze into a round hole, Jota could well be the fourth member of the Beatles.

His pace and movement holds all the trademarks of the effective forwards Liverpool have had in recent years, and it is now two essentially match-winning goals in the space of a week.

If the 23-year-old continues to be as decisive as he has been then Jürgen Klopp may have to find a way to get him in the team more regularly alongside Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino.

A really promising start at his new club for the former Wolves man.

Time to part ways, Divock

Divock Origi will be remembered fondly by Liverpool supporters for his escapades in the past.

His goals against Everton, in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona followed by the winner in the final have earned him cult hero status. His name will appear in the tales told to children and grandchildren by fans reminiscing on the glory days in 30 years time.

But it might be time for all parties to go their separate ways.

The Belgian has been limited to just appearances in the Carabao Cup so far this season so it was surprising to see him start tonight.

His performance didn’t make that performance any less surprising and it’s safe to say that the 25-year-old didn’t exactly stake his claim for a first-team berth during his 60 minutes on the pitch.

Origi looked laboured, his touch was nowhere to be seen and seemed more likely to threaten his own teammates than the opposition goal.

This Liverpool team and it’s fluid and subtle approach to attacking has moved on from Origi’s different skillset and it looks obvious now more than ever.
