Spurs not at the races

The chances were slim before this game anyway but it now looks as if Tottenham’s hopes of participating in next season’s Champions League are all but over.

Spurs are now five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea having played a game more than Thomas Tuchel’s side.

And the truth is they were never really at the races today.

Leeds overawed them from the first whistle, never giving their visitors the chance to hit them on the counter attack or get Harry Kane consistently into the game.

Ryan Mason will have every right to have been annoyed about Kane’s disallowed goal but in truth that would’ve given Spurs a lead against the run of play.

They were outfought and overpowered today and the attention must turn to ensuring they now finish in the top six to give the new manager some European football to work with at least.

Fine margins

It seems like every week there is a new VAR offside decision which appears to be the most ludicrous we’ve ever seen but Leeds v Tottenham provided us with the outright winner in that awards category.

Kane had just chipped Illan Meslier to put Spurs in front before the game was ruled out for offside.

VAR upheld the decision, even after drawing the infamous lines around the Leeds defence and the Spurs captain.

But on the angles that have been shown to us all, we can’t see where, or which part of Kane, is behind the opposition defence.

A discussion about the technology within the relevant parties will surely be held at the end of the season.

Here to stay

Leeds have been a welcome addition to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa and his team have stuck to the principles that earned them promotion from the Championship and they are a joy top watch, more often to that.

The pressing is intense, the transitional play can be mesmerising and you can guarantee there will always be goals in their games.

They’ve also learned how to mix it up against the bigger teams in the division in recent weeks, earning draws against Liverpool and Manchester United, and of course there was that win against Manchester City.

A top-half finish is in their grasp, and we doff our cap to Bielsa and co.
