Identity crisis continues

Just last season Liverpool finished second in the Premier League but this time around that seems to be a statement you wouldn’t believe.

The club continues to be a shadow of themselves this season and sits ninth after back-to-back losses despite beating Manchester City earlier in October.

The confusing bit is Liverpool aren’t necessarily playing poor football.

They had 70% possession of the ball, 22 shots to Leeds’ 14 and 672 passes to 300 with cameos from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino all positive.

Instead, it’s the lingering identity crisis that strikes again.

It’s been a topsy-turvy season for Jürgen Klopp’s side and following this result, they will need to find answers fast if they still want to push for a spot in the top four.

Anfield is a fortress no more.

Game-changer

There were plenty of big-name stars on the pitch this Saturday but the best performance came from the man in between the sticks for Leeds

Illan Meslier almost had an embarrassing moment within 40 seconds as the hosts came inches away from taking the lead but the 22-year-old settled in afterward and proved to be the difference.

He made nine saves on the night (seven from close range) which included denying Salah, Nunez and Andy Robertson.

Without his stellar individual performance, we’re not sure Crysencio Summerville would have been able to hit an 89th-minute winner.

It was a very impressive effort despite the early trouble. Perhaps Meslier could be in for a World Cup call-up?

What now for Marsch?

Prior to this match, Leeds manager Jesse Marsch held nothing back when discussing his side’s recent run of form.

“I’m kind of angry right now … I’m tired of not getting results that we should be getting,” said the American during pre-match media duties.

“I’ve never lost this much in my career and I’m sick of it.”

Well, the squad has now turned his frown upside down after a stunning performance in front of one of football’s most difficult stages: a rocking Anfield crowd.

The visitors had a clear game plan and struck first against Liverpool, remained determined and showed some true character to win it at the death.

In short, they believed, and subsequently moved out of the relegation zone with this victory to sit 15th in the table.

Now the question is can they keep the momentum up with Premier League clashes against Bournemouth, Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle next?
