Starting to come together

Chelsea have been an enigma this season. After a massive spending spree to rebuild the squad in the summer, the results and performances have not always shown symmetry so far in the 2023/24 campaign.

But with victory away to, then league leaders, Tottenham Hotspur last time out and now showing plenty of fight to come from behind on multiple occasions to take a point off of current league leaders Manchester City, Chelsea are showing the signs.

A wing pairing of Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer (both former City players) is proving to be quite the dynamic duo for Mauricio Pochettino.

Combine that with the burgeoning partnership of Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández in midfield, things might just be starting to come together at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues became the first team to score three or more goals against City this season. Are they on a track back towards the upper reaches of the Premier League?

Unusual amount of chaos from the Champions

Manchester City’s quality will never be doubted, but the Etihad outfit’s trademark characteristic in recent seasons has been their ability to control and suffocate a game.

But something seemed off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening. Rodri gave the ball away more than usual, Jérémy Doku’s addition on the left-hand side provided a spark, but it opened City up to counter-attacks from the home side.

Keeping everything in front of you is the name of the game for City, but Chelsea kept them on their heels more than may be comfortable with.

In Pep Guardiola’s 882 games as a top-flight manager, this was the first time he has seen his side both score and concede four goals in a single match.

Chaos reigned supreme on Sunday, but Guardiola will be privately seething.

A game of vengeance

Not many things haunt Manchester City these days. However, former players Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling might just be causing some nightmare in east Manchester going forward.

While the dynamic duo used to don the sky-blue City shirt, they showed Pep Guardiola just what he was missing Sunday evening, terrorising the City defence all throughout the 90 minutes plus at Stamford Bridge.

While Sterling struck in the first half to give Chelsea the lead, it was Palmer who showed just how icy his veins are in stoppage time when he salvaged a point from the penalty-spot.

On top of that, Sterling was once again snubbed by Gareth Southgate in the recent England squad, but he must be working his way back into the national team picture with his recent showings.

Have Chelsea found their wing pairing for the foreseeable future? It looks likely.
