So much for easing ourselves into the new season. After just two weeks of action, we have been treated to some vintage Premier League shenanigans.

The temperature in London may have topped the 30° mark but that was nothing compared to the heat on the park – and on the touchline in particular.

The antics from Antonio Conte in particular were incredible, captivating viewing. Nobody could ever have accused him before of being a shrinking violet but he took things to new territory here.

His charge into Thomas Tuchel’s technical area after Spurs’ first equaliser was shocking at the time – but proved to be just the starter as he infuriated the Blues staff with his reaction to Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s strike.

His opposite number responded in kind with a José Mourinho-esque charge down the touchline after Reece James had restored Chelsea’s lead and it looked like that would be the end of it.

Only for Harry Kane to rescue a 96th-minute point which led to both managers again getting physical following the full-time handshake that resulted in things spilling over again and both men being sent off.

The league is long overdue for a good old-fashioned managerial rivalry. We already have Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham in late February circled in the calendar.

Chelsea’s reasons for frustration

Chelsea will be wondering how on earth they did not manage to make it six wins on the spin against Spurs in this one.

They were dominant in the first half and held a lead until the 96th minute, restricting Tottenham to very few chances throughout but while they were clinical on scraps, the Blues were wasteful with their opportunities.

Raheem Sterling blazed over from the centre of the area with the goal gaping, while Kai Havertz produced an astonishing miss – two misses which appeared they would get away with until Kane struck at the death.

But even if they must take some responsibility for their own failings in front of goal, they will mostly feel frustration with the officiating which arguably went against them for both Tottenham goals.

Tuchel’s frustrations after Højbjerg’s goal weren’t just related to Conte’s behaviour. Rodrigo Bentancur was somehow not penalised for a foul on Havertz in the build-up to that goal, while Richarlison may also have restricted Édouard Mendy’s view from an offside position.

And when Kane pounced at the death, that goal came from a corner after Cristian Romero wasn’t penalised from the previous one which saw him yank Marc Cucurella to ground by his hair.

They have every reason to feel furious.

Harry makes history

Amid all of the incredible chaos and drama, Spurs captain Kane quietly made another impressive bit of Premier League history.

His glancing, deflected header with just seconds remaining may not be the most beautiful of goals he ever gets but it will be one of the most memorable.

Not only for helping Spurs secure a point from a fiery derby that shows they may just be contenders under Conte after all but for what it means for him.

It moves Kane into fourth place on the all-time scorers’ list in the league on 184 and no player has scored more for just one club (level with Manchester City legend Sergio Agüero).

Third place is quickly moving into his sights, with Andrew Cole now just three ahead on 187 and only Thierry Henry with 43 has more London derby goals than Kane’s 42.
