Here is what we made of it.

Silent but deadly

Harry Kane was hardly involved tonight – yet still played a huge part in the outcome of the match.

The 27-year-old has found joy this season in reinventing himself as the complete forward, dropping deeper than usual and adding assists to his many talents.

But tonight was almost a throwback to the Kane of old – a deadly penalty box poacher.

The Spurs captain was presented with two opportunities in the penalty area courtesy of two mistakes from Michael Keane and he applied with gratitude.

His first was the work of an incredible first touch to set himself up before stroking the ball into the bottom corner.

For that goal he appeared to have the freedom of Merseyside but his second was almost blink-and-you-miss-it.

Not many strikers would instinctively hit the ball first time in the way that it dropped to Kane but he did it with aplomb, belting the ball into the top corner with his other foot.

He’s surpassed the 20 goal mark for the fifth time, only Alan Shearer and Sergio Agüero have achieved that on more occasions in the Premier League era.

Concern for club and country

We feel like we’re cheating a bit by dedicating two points to Harry Kane tonight but he was involved with perhaps the biggest talking point of the night in stoppage time.

Where would Tottenham be this season without his contributions?

José Mourinho may have to answer that question soon as he faces an anxious wait to see how bad the injury which made him limp off in stoppage time is.

Kane limped off and headed straight for treatment with Mourinho looking concerned when in discussion with his medical staff as he left the pitch.

For the England captain not to feel like he could even finish the game by waiting a few minutes longer perhaps tells us all what we need to do.

Club, and country, will be fearing the worst.

Not Champions League ready

These two teams still harbour ambitions of making a late charge for the Champions League qualification places, but on this evidence they both look way off.

Friday night football at Goodison Park proved to be a treat but that was as much down to the ineptitude of the teams, rather than just their abilities.

Both defences looked shaky and capable of errors at any given moment, as Michael Keane and Mason Holgate proved, and you have to ponder neither side threw more at snatching the win late on with vital points to play for and games running out.

The topsy-turvy nature of the 90 minutes made for great viewing for the neutral and that’s all we can ask for.

But Chelsea, West Ham and Leicester will rest easy tonight.
