Arsenal closed the gap in the Premier League title race with a 3-1 win over Liverpool.
Here is what we made of events at the Emirates Stadium …
The post-match celebrations may have appeared a little excessive but also underlined what Arsenal’s victory represents to this Premier League title race.
Had Liverpool succeded, Mikel Arteta’s side would have been downgraded to virtual onlookers with an eight-point shortfall to make up on the leaders.
But the hosts are now breathing down the neck of the current champions-elect after an emphatic display from start to finish in Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash.
Everything that could have gone the Gunners’ way almost invariably did, thanks in no small part to Jorginho’s much-anticipated return to the midfield ranks.
With a further 15 games before the moment of truth, a three-way battle for supremacy remains very much on the cards.
Fine margins often swing the pendulum of football’s biggest contests but it was defensive howlers that set the tone at the Emirates Stadium.
First, crossed wires between William Saliba and David Raya saw Liverpool draw level against the run of play on the stroke of half-time.
Alisson and Virgil van Dijk repeated the trick in the second half to allow Gabriel Martinelli the easiest of finishes, tapping into an empty net.
Were that not enough, the Brazilian goalkeeper was caught out a second time by Leandro Trossard nutmegging home a third at his near post.
Three moments of madness which enlivened an already intriguing contest are exactly why people love the Premier League.
Injuries and absences conspired against Liverpool as they succumbed to defeat for a second time this season in north London.
Not since their controversial loss to Tottenham in September have Jürgen Klopp’s men fallen short in their Premier League quest.
It was, however, an afternoon when they looked anything other than the new champions-in-waiting.
But don’t expect to see the Reds getting caught cold again anytime soon, if at all this season, as Klopp’s farewell tour starts to ramp up.
Regardless of circumstances, the outgoing German won’t accept a performance as gutless as the one his charges produced at the Emirates.
