With Memo Ochoa out for a significant period of time due to injury, Oscar Jiménez is now América’s number one for the time-being.
Though the 31-year-old has been at América since January 2017, opportunities have been few and far between, making just 18 appearances in that time.
That hasn’t stopped the veteran from being clinical between the sticks, as he showed in the Clásico Joven, making seven saves and earning the clean sheet after being thrust into the starting XI less than an hour before kickoff.
With two years left on his current deal and suddenly being thrown into the spotlight, Jiménez realises this is a golden opportunity for him to earn one last big contract.
“You never know. Right now I’m living in the moment,” the goalkeeper said.
“I am happy. I am defending the team that I’ve loved since I was a child, that I’ve dreamed of, and I know that I am at a moment in my career where many things could come to me.
“I have to think if it is what I really want (to continue with América). I always prepare myself and if there are opportunities, they will be analysed.
“But right now I’m living in the moment. I am very happy at América.”
Jiménez has spent his entire career in Mexico, previously making first-team appearances with Chiapas and Lobos BUAP.
