The occasions in which Guillermo Ochoa has not been able to keep his position as América’s number one goalkeeper have been few and far between.

The first of them were a couple of weeks in which he was infected with Covid-19. Otherwise, he’s only missed out while he’s been away with the Mexican national team.

On these occasions, Club América kept Óscar Jiménez in goal and he’s been quite strong in his absence: allowing just six goals in six games over the last two seasons, earning three clean sheets.

However, he has made a few glaring mistakes, which has caused fans to criticise him while not allowing himself to be in a real competition for the number one spot.

Though his contract is set to expire at the end of 2022, it’s possible the 32-year-old could leave the club 18 months early as he’s craving more time between the sticks.

That’s according to journalist Jonatan Peña, who claims that it’s unclear whether or not the América board are ready to part with the veteran shot-stopper.

Should he be allowed to leave this summer, Mazatlán would be his most likely destination, as Nicolás Vikonis is expected to leave as a number of teams are interested in his services.

Another possibility would be a move to Monterrey, where Jiménez would be in very active competition with former América goalkeeper Hugo González, who has only earned six clean sheets in 31 games over the past two seasons.
