On Thursday, reports emerged confirming that Real Madrid’s request to reschedule their opening game of the 2025/26 La Liga season against Osasuna was denied.
Real Madrid are scheduled to play Osasuna on August 19, but sought to postpone that fixture citing the reduced summer break they have received owing to the FIFA Club World Cup.
La Liga was always opposed to the idea and even though Real Madrid had the support of the Spanish Players’ Association (AFE), the Sole Judge of the Competitions Committee rejected their request.

“The AFE informed us and we were willing to help Real Madrid. Our first intention was to help and postpone the match. It seemed like the logical thing to do, but now all we have to do is play,” he stated.
A vocal advocate for players’ welfare, Herrera pointed out that the Club World Cup is not a friendly tournament and brings international exposure to La Liga.
“Beyond teams, I think about my fellow players… if that were my case, I would like Real Madrid to understand,” he further stated.
Following the verdict of the Sole Judge, Real Madrid are planning to make an appeal to try and get the game postponed. It remains to be seen if they are successful in their efforts to get the Osasuna match moved to a later date.
