Orlando Pride makes NWSL history with playoff massacre over Chicago Red Stars

History was made as Orlando Pride hosts came out emphatically to win 4-1 against visitors Chicago Red Stars at Inter&Co Stadium. Besides that, it is the first-ever playoff win for Pride in the National Women's Soccer League; the match also tended to be a defining moment for some players and the club. This will catapult them into the semifinals that are set to be held at Inter&Co Stadium, with Pride seeking to make more history.

The first half saw Pride start strong from the outset, showing their growth as a team and a laser-like focus on advancing further into the competition. In the 26 th minute of the game, the first goal was opened by Haley McCutcheon, via header, netting her first goal of the season and notably the Pride's very first playoff goal at home. McCutcheon-first goal since April 2023-showed all the guts and finesse one might have expected on such occasions. Ally Watt set it up so nicely, crossing in after Summer Yates took a corner kick.

This wasn't just an important early moment because of the goal itself but it was a tone-setter for Pride being confident and organized, a precursor to what would come.

Barbra Banda Shines with Decisive Goals

Barbra Banda emerged as another standout player. In the 39th minute of the game, with a perfect pass from Emily Sams, Banda dribbled past the Red Stars' defense en route to her 14th goal of the season. The moment seemed frozen as Banda coolly slotted the ball into the lower right corner against goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The forward became the first African international to score twice in an NWSL playoff match-a feat that speaks volumes about her value to the side and good form in big moments.

In stoppage time of the first half, Banda struck again. This time, after a deep pass from Ally Watt, she found herself in a one-on-one with Naeher yet again, coolly dribbling around her to seal Pride's third. By then, a game that was anything but decided had Pride flexing their muscles and taking hold.

Queen Marta: Leadership and Precision

Then came another iconic moment in the second half. A legendary chance for Pride captain and soccer icon Marta to extend the lead was on hand after a penalty had been awarded through VAR review following a foul on Banda in the box. It was symbolic, and Marta, with all her experience, scored her tenth goal of the season and her first in an NWSL playoff. Her penalty kick, well-placed into the right corner, was beyond Naeher's reach.

This goal wasn't just another number on the scoreboard. It was one more proof of Marta's role of leadership and importance for Pride. When it comes to the field, her presence has been imperative for keeping the team organized and focused.

Jameese Joseph and Chicago’s Consolation Goal

Not long after Marta's goal, the Chicago Red Stars were able to net a consolation goal through Jameese Joseph. During a high-pressure play, Joseph capitalized on a poorly executed back pass to goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, quickly sending the ball into the net to narrow the gap to 4-1. Joseph's goal was a rare moment for the Red Stars in a game that was comprehensively controlled by Pride on Sunday.

Road Ahead: Semifinals and Expectations

Orlando Pride now advances to the semifinals, this Saturday, November 16, at Inter&Co Stadium. They will face whoever wins the quarterfinal between Kansas City Current and North Carolina Courage. But with the historic playoff win in their pocket, and a consistent team showing its offensive power, Pride is motivated and confident to enter this next phase. Another match to watch them at home, and the expectations will be through the roof.
