Orlando City’s bold move with Marco Pasalić raises big questions

Article image:Orlando City’s bold move with Marco Pasalić raises big questions

Orlando City SC started the market with one of the most interesting signings of a 24-year-old Croatian winger, Marco Pasalić, from HNK Rijeka, the top-flight Croatian club. He is under contract until 2027, with an option for 2028. The player enters as a Designated Player together with the forward Luis Muriel and midfielder Martín Ojeda.

Expectations run high, above all, because the Croatian has arrived to fill the gap left by Facundo Torres, the leading actor of recent years sold to Palmeiras for a record transfer fee. But will the Croatian be ready for this leading role? What will he bring to the Lions' attack? Let's analyze.

Who is Marco Pasalić, and why did Orlando notice him?

Professional, Pasalić started his professional career in Germany, having played for VfB Stuttgart II before transferring to one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe, Borussia Dortmund. However, he had little luck with the first team of Dortmund, having played only a couple of times. It was in HNK Rijeka in Croatia that he really began to show his face.

An international with Croatia on five occasions — including being part of the preliminary roster for the Euro 2024 roster — he netted his first ever international goal last year during a 3-0 friendly victory over North Macedonia.

Facundo Torres's replacement?

Facundo Torres' transfer to Palmeiras left a gaping hole in Orlando City's attack. Since his arrival in 2022, the Uruguayan had been a cornerstone of the team, recording 37 goals and 20 assists in 95 regular-season MLS appearances.

Now, Pasalić is expected to step up. But does he have the credentials to be the next offensive leader?

Orlando City's attack takes on a new dimension

With the addition of Pasalić , the Orlando City front line becomes different. Now, this is a team carrying a Designated Player trio with Luis Muriel, Martín Ojeda, and Pasalić-a trio that brings creativity and fluidity to the offense.

The lineup is rounded up by Iván Angulo, Ramiro Enrique (U22 Initiative), Duncan McGuire (USMNT), and the recently signed Nicolás Rodríguez. In all, offensive options will become aplenty for head coach Óscar Pareja.

The big question is how Pareja fits these pieces into place. Pasalić can play both out on the left wing and more centrally, but he'll have to prove he can take on a leading role in the attack.

What to know about Pasalić MLS debut

The big test will be for Pasalić on February 22 when Orlando City takes on Philadelphia Union for the opening of the 2025 MLS season. It will be a great opportunity to have an actual idea of how well he performs with the rest of the squad and whether he can replace Facundo Torres properly.

While many fans seek immediate success, they will need some time to adjust to the difference between MLS playing style and European leagues.
