After starting the season with a draw and two losses, Orlando City pulled off six straight victories and looked to be well on their way to an MLS Cup run.
However, that’s as good as their season would get, as the Lions have won just once since the beginning of May and are currently on a 13-match winless run.
During their 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders Wednesday night, the Eastern Conference’s worst team set a dubious MLS record.
With two matches left to play this season, the Lions have given up 72 goals – the most in MLS history.
“It’s not a great thing,” said Orlando defender Scott Sutter on the record. “It’s not something you can be proud of, breaking a record for most goals.
“It’s a shame. That’s the way it is. There’s not really much we can do. Just got to focus on the last two games and then the offseason and try to figure it out for next season.”
The previous record was set just last year during Minnesota United’s expansion season, when they allowed 70 goals.
The Loons haven’t fared much better in 2018, as they’ve allowed 65 goals this year through 32 of 34 matches.
There’s still an outside chance Orlando City may not finish the season with the record, however, as the San Jose Earthquakes have allowed 69 goals this season themselves.
