Oriol Romeu has spoken of the frustration he endured watching from the sidelines as Southampton’s season fizzled out.

The 29-year-old fractured his ankle against Leeds in February, and was initially ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

However the defensive midfielder recovered in time to make a substitute appearance in the final day 3-0 defeat at West Ham.

“I’m happy to be back yes and being able to play a few minutes is a nice thing,” Romeu told the Southern Daily Star.

“But I was not that happy with the result and the way it went.

“We have conceded many goals, we conceded many chances and we haven’t pushed them, probably. A bit disappointed in that way.”

Southampton did reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup only to lose 1-0 to Leicester at Wembley.

The Saints also enjoyed an impressive start to the Premier League season, but faded in the New Year to end up finishing in a disappointing 15th place.

Romeu wants the St Mary’s outfit to get out of their funk before the action begins in August.

“Now the following six weeks are going to be crucial for us to start the pre-season in a good way and the season afterwards,” the Catalan native said.

Romeu made 21 league appearances last term, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
