FC Barcelona have made an incredible start to the La Liga season, winning 11 out of 12 games so far with their only loss coming to Osasuna in a game when Hansi Flick named a much-rotated starting XI to keep his starters fresh for the upcoming Champions League fixture.
What this means is that after the game against Espanyol at the Montjuic last night, Barcelona are nine points clear at the top of the La Liga table ahead of Real Madrid who have played one game less, following the cancellation of their weekend’s game against Valencia.
In the traditional sense, Barcelona’s biggest competition for the La Liga title has come from the two Madrid clubs—Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Over the past ten seasons, the La Liga title has always been won by one of these three teams.
Now, one look at the La Liga standings gives you an overview of just how dominant Barcelona have been so far this season. The stats tell you a picture and give you an idea of why the Catalan club might run away with the title of this campaign.
Barcelona have scored 40 goals in the league so far this season, shipping 11 in return. They have the fourth-best defensive record in La Liga but Hansi Flick is very clear that his team is built on its attacking might rather than their defense.
The numbers that the team has put up so far from an attacking sense are baffling. Barcelona have scored 40 goals in La Liga so far. To put it into perspective, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid combined have one goal less (39).
This one stat shows just how dominant Barcelona’s attack have been. Atletico have always been a club built on defensive solidity but that doesn’t mean that they don’t score goals. Real Madrid on the other hand has constantly been one of the top-scoring teams in the league.
However, neither team is able to hold a candle to Hansi Flick’s attack, which keeps scoring goals for fun. The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal have run riot in La Liga so far, ably supported by the likes of Pedri, Marc Casado, and Dani Olmo.
Lewandowski in particular, looks to be running away with the Pichichi. He is not just outscoring players (14) but has also outscored some teams in La Liga including Real Betis (12), Mallorca (10), Rayo Vallecano (12), Real Sociedad (10), Sevilla (12), Leganes (12), Getafe (8), Espanyol (11), Las Palmas (13), Valladolid (9) and Valencia (8) while Alaves have the same number of goals as him.
This means that 12(!) teams in La Liga have scored as many or less than just Lewandowski. Supported by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, the team just seems to keep getting better and better with every passing performance.
Barcelona currently doesn’t just have one of the best attacks in La Liga but also one of the best attacks in Europe. Everything points to them having a sensational season under Hansi Flick and let’s wait and see how it plays out.
