(Opinion) : Chelsea’s current midfield profiles are a disaster | OneFootball

At the time of writing, Chelsea have still not struck a deal with Benfica for Enzo Fernandez but have struck an agreement with Arsenal for vice-captain Jorginho.

This leaves Chelsea currently in a mess profile wise in midfield, the club has an abundance of number eights including Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Carney Chukweumeka however on the flip side, Jorginho is the only recognised number six in midfield and when you take a look at who else could play there, the outlook looks more than worrying.

Denis Zakaria would likely be the favourite to start in the number six role considering his defensive abilities and combination of pace and strength however manager Graham Potter has used him primarily further forward thus far and to add to the woes Chelsea currently face, Denis is currently injured.

We have seen Mateo Kovacic play number six a number of times over the course of his Chelsea career and whilst he is a good tackler, there are always concerns over his ability to track runners, especially off the ball and it also limits his best ability which is being able to carry the ball forward into the final third.

Andrey Santos has been rumoured to be the next youngster integrated into the Chelsea squad having impressed Chelsea board members during the ongoing U20 South American Championship however fast tracking him into a Chelsea squad that needs results is less than ideal considering he is 18 years old and has never played above the Brazilian second division in his career so far.

Conor Gallagher, who could still yet leave before the end of today, is an absolute no go in either position in Graham Potter’s double pivot whilst Ruben Loftus Cheek lacks the urgency to progress the ball and make angles as the number six.

Bottom line is, Chelsea not landing a top class midfielder today whilst allowing Jorginho to leave would be the biggest red flag of the ownership since their takeover and you also have to question recruitment members and Graham Potter’s unity, I am convinced Potter would not let such a player go without certainties someone was coming in to replace him.
