  1. Eight trophies (four straight Scudetti among them) won in four seasons
  2. Lost just 12 of their 152 league fixtures during that period, including only two at home
  3. Won a historic treble in 2010 – something no other Italian side has ever done

  • Javier Zanetti – The Captain. The Tractor. Simply, Mr Inter
  • Diego Milito – 22 May 2010. Enough said
  • Júlio César – Another mainstay, with 181 appearances in four years

After the Calciopoli rocked and then tore Italian football apart in the summer of 2006, there was room for a new king to ascend to the top of the mountain.

Grasping that opportunity with both hands were Inter, a giant of the game in the peninsula who had lay dormant for too long, bankrolled by Massimo Moratti’s million they spent a lot and won little.

They asserted their dominance both domestically and on the global stage in the latter half of the noughties in devastating fashion.

Under Roberto Mancini, they made a mockery of a weakened division, never relinquishing top spot as they broke Roma’s record of 11 straight Serie A wins by reeling off 17 – one which still stands today.

With Zlatan Ibrahimović in outrageous form, they lost just three league games the following year to retain their title, this time seeing off a robust Roma challenge which pushed them all the way.

Europe continued to prove their Achilles’ heel though and Mancini paid for their underperforming on that front with his job, with president Moratti keen to emulate his father by winning the Champions League trophy.

The man they sought to do it? José Mourinho. What he achieved over his two years with the Biscione means he will forever be loved and remembered fondly among Interisti everywhere, establishing them as a truly elite force.

In those two seasons, San Siro was transformed into a genuine fortress, with Mourinho tasting defeat at home just ONCE in all competitions!

His first season brought another league title but 2009/10 was the rock in which he built his legacy – starting with some astute signings by recruiting Diego Milito, Wesley Sneijder, Samuel Eto’o Lucio, Thiago Motta and Goran Pandev.

All played their part in a cleansweep campaign as they won Serie A for the fifth year in a row, added the Coppa Italia and finally got their hands on the Champions League for the first time since 1965 thanks to a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in Madrid.

Mourinho’s exit that summer for Real Madrid brought a swift end to the era of dominance – winning just a Club World Cup and Coppa Italia in the ensuing years.
