Continuing our countdown with 13th place, we have …

Ajax 1992-1996

Why are they here?

  • Three consecutive Eredivisie titles (1994, 1995, 1996)
  • Champions League winners (1995)
  • Finished the 1994/95 league season unbeaten

The stars

  • Patrick Kluivert – the goalscoring prodigy
  • Jari Litmanen – the iconic number ten
  • Edgar Davids – the midfield engine

Few clubs boast the footballing heritage and worldwide renown of Ajax.

And while figures like Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff played crucial roles in forming this status, their side from the early 90s was truly iconic.

But it’s easy to forget that things didn’t exactly start with a bang.

After winning the Eredivisie in 1990, they didn’t win their next one until 1994 despite Dennis Bergkamp winning the golden boot in three successive seasons.

Ajax lost Bergkamp to Inter that summer (1993) and manager Louis van Gaal was forced into a re-think.

But some clever transfer business and leaning into the club’s rich youth tradition would transform their fortunes entirely.

Jari Litmanen arrived from Finnish club MyPa, Nigerian duo Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George were also brought in, while young stars Patrick Kluivert and Clarence Seedorf rose to first-team prominence.

They won the Eredivisie ahead of nearest rivals Feyenoord, scoring 86 goals and losing just twice in the process.

But it was the following season where footballing history was made.

Ajax successfully retained their title in 1994/95, scoring 106 goals and conceding just 28, but what made this feat so impressive was the ‘L’ column – and the big fat zero underneath it.

Everybody remembers the famous Arsenal side who went an entire league season unbeaten but this side did it first, with a squad boasting an average age of 23.7 years.

And after winning the KNVB Cup to secure a domestic double, they took on Milan in the Champions League final and won, thanks to a late goal from 18-year-old substitute Kluivert.

Make no mistake this was an outrageously talented squad.

Edwin van der Sar looked imperious in goal, Frank de Boer and Danny Blind were rocks in defence, with Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids essentially forming a dream midfield triangle.

Managers still have nightmares about trying to stop Litmanen, Kluivert and Marc Overmars who directly contributed to 70 goals between them (55 goals, 15 assists) that season.

Between 1994 and 1996, Ajax completed an unbeaten run of 52 domestic matches and 19 Champions League matches.

The 1995 side remained unbeaten for a full year, in Europe and in domestic league – a run of 48 matches overall.

Winning both the Champions League and domestic league without a single defeat is a historical achievement unmatched by any other team.

This wasn’t just your typical Ajax side dominating the Eredivisie.

This was a brilliant young team, playing football rarely seen before under Van Gaal who dominated Europe.

The squad was eventually broken up but during those four years, they truly were invincible.
