The Easter weekend threw up some big results in title races across England and Germany in particular.

Time and time again he denied Leipzig with an immense showing between the posts for Mainz in their 0-0 draw. From one-on-ones to shots from range, nothing could breach him in what will go down as one of the outstanding goalkeeping performances of the Bundesliga season.

RB: Adam Marušić (Lazio)

Playing at right-back without the ball under new boss Igor Tudor but operating with much more attacking freedom in possession, the Montenegrin made the most of it with his thumping last gasp header delivering a memorable win over Juventus – and that was after his vital goal-saving block earlier to deny Moise Kean at the back.

CB: Sergio Ramos (Sevilla)

On the weekend that he turned 38, the Sevilla veteran rolled the clock back with a performance which belied his years. He scored the only goal on their trip to Getafe early and after that, marshalled the defence through without too much fuss in keeping a clean sheet for the victory.

CB: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

For anyone in any doubts about the Dortmund defender’s abilities at the top end of the game, he provided a definitive answer in helping his side end their decade-long wait for victory at Bayern Munich. The standout performer on the field, there are still few in the country who come close to him when he is on top form.

The defender started Monaco’s 5-2 win at Metz in formidable form and never let up from there. By the half-hour mark, he had already won possession back five times and was also a constant threat going in the other direction.

CM: Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Although he operated in more of a wide right role, there was no way of excluding the man Mauricio Pochettino hailed as ‘Chelsea’s best player’ after his display in the 2-2 draw with Burnley. His Panenka penalty showed his confidence and class, while his second of the game took him to a completely unexpected 21 goals and assists for his first season at Stamford Bridge – the youngest ever to do so in the Premier League and more than Eden Hazard managed in his debut campaign.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool)

As close to a flawless midfield performance as was witnessed anywhere in the world over the weekend. He did everything and did it superbly, winning possession back repeatedly against his former club and displaying his technical prowess with his passing range – encapsulated perfectly by his assist for Mo Salah’s winner.

CM: Vitinha (PSG)

Given a start in Le Classique at Marseille, he didn’t disappoint. Quite the opposite, Vitinha rose to the challenge. He shone from start to finish, got himself on the scoresheet and has given Luis Enrique plenty to think about ahead of the Champions League, full of running and rarely wasting possession.

The Brazilian has had a tough time of it recently at Los Blancos and will be feeling the pressure ahead of the anticipated summer arrivals of Kylian Mbappé and Endrick. But he sent out a well-timed reminder of his abilities with a brace against Athletic Club in Real’s 2-0 win. A statement showing when it was needed most.

ST: Ben Brereton Díaz (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United really should have picked up a much-needed three points when they threw away their late 3-1 lead against Fulham to draw 3-3 but it wasn’t for lack of trying on the Chile international’s part – he finished up with two goals and an assist for the Blades’ other goal. He deserved to end up on the winning side.

LW: Raphinha (Barcelona)

A relentless showing, he was the key man in the Blaugrana’s 1-0 win over Las Palmas. The Brazilian created multiple chances throughout both for himself and others, had a goal harshly disallowed, got the opposition goalkeeper sent off and then struck for a second half winner, stamping his mark all over the contest.
