There were several standout showings across Europe last weekend but who stood out above the rest?

Here, in a 4-2-3-1 formation, is our top XI.

GK: Alphonse Areola (West Ham)

By some distance, West Ham's Man of the Match in their 3-1 win at Everton. The highlights of his afternoon were two superb stops from Beto, one from open play and another from the penalty spot - his second such save of the season.

RB: Jonathan Clauss (Marseille)

Having came in for intense criticism last month from sporting director Medhi Benatia, the defender did his talking on the field in Saturday's 5-1 win at Clermont with a display which saw other club officials eager to leap to his defence. "He knows how to attack when we play with five at the back, he knows how to defend when we play with four," coach Jean-Louis Gasset said afterwards. "He is one of France's top two or three full-backs."

CB: Alberto Dossena (Cagliari)

One of the revelations of the season showed why his rising reputation is well earned with an impeccable performance in Cagliari's 1-0 win at Empoli. An immense showing from start to finish in helping his side to a clean sheet and valuable three points on the road.

CB: José Copete (Mallorca)

A winning goal at one end and a game-saving last ditch block at the other meant that Mallorca's surprise 1-0 victory over second-placed Girona was all about one man. A defining night for the Spaniard who had to wait very patiently and do the dirty work prior to getting his top flight chance.

LB: Ian Maatsen (Dortmund)

One of the most inspired bits of business from the January window, the Chelsea loanee has taken to life at the Westfalenstadion like a duck to water, as evidenced by his Bundesliga Rookie of the Month honour. His latest standout showing came in Berlin, where he netted the first top flight goal of his young career in a 2-0 win for BVB at Union.

CM: Fredrik Jensen (Augsburg)

To stand out in a 6-0 victory (as Augsburg achieved against struggling Darmstadt) is a testament to just how good the Finn was. He scored his side's second of the afternoon as well as providing the assist for the fifth, needing just 45 minutes to do all of his damage. Jensen exited at half-time for a well-earned breather but by then, his performance was so good that he is still worthy of inclusion here.

CM: Dani Parejo (Villarreal)

Augsburg weren't the weekend's only big winners, with Villarreal hitting Granada for five in Spain. The architect of that success was their deep-lying play-making maestro Parejo, who contributed a hat-trick of assists to the victory. It means that he now joins an exclusive LaLiga club of five players with 55+ goals and 55+ assists over the last decade, along with Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann.

RW: Paulo Dybala (Roma)

His purple patch under Daniele De Rossi continued with a delightful free-kick and an assist in the 4-1 win over Monza, who failed to ever get a handle on his free role off the striker. He has nine goals so far in 2024 and if he can stay injury-free, the sky will be the limit for La Joya.

CAM: Phil Foden (Man City)

Prior to the Manchester derby, the midfielder contradicted claims on his world class status, insisting he isn't there yet - and then turned in an elite showing that proves he is wrong in assessing his own abilities. Foden is undoubtedly of that standard and proved it with two outstanding goals to fire City to a first ever comeback win over United in the Premier League. "This season he has been the best player [in the Premier League] so far," Pep Guardiola claimed afterwards.

LW: Arnaud Nordin (Montpellier)

In a direct duel against a relegation rival, the Montpellier forward was determined to ensure his side would not suffer a costly defeat against Strasbourg. He single-handedly carried his side's attack, equalising twice in the closing stages for a priceless point, the second of which came thanks to a volley that perhaps only he could have produced for his side.

ST: Alexander Sørloth (Villarreal)

While Parejo bagged a hat-trick of assists in the 5-1 win against Granada, his Norwegian team-mate opted for the more conventional hat-trick of goals to take his impressive LaLiga stats for the season to 12 goals and four assists in 19 starts.
