Not all leagues may be back and some were enjoying domestic cup action over the past weekend, but it doesn’t mean there weren’t some standout performances.

In a 3-5-2 formation, who makes our Team of the Weekend?

GK: Andrea Consigli (Sassuolo)

Throughout the second half of his side’s clash with Fiorentina, amid a torrential downpour in Reggio Emilia, the veteran was frequently called upon to preserve his side’s lead and clean sheet. The biggest intervention undoubtedly came with a flying penalty save on Giacomo Bonaventura – his first such stop after a run of nine without a save.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool)

A colossal Man of the Match performance from the Frenchman at the Emirates Stadium saw his side leave Arsenal with a clean sheet and safe passage to the FA Cup fourth round. He always seemed to be in the right place, particularly when backing up team-mates in times of trouble, and in the absence of Virgil van Dijk, Konaté really stood up to be counted.

CB: Alessandro Buongiorno (Torino)

The Granata’s outstanding start to the season (their second best since 1994) continued with a ruthless 3-0 thrashing of defending champions Napoli and once more Buongiorno was faultless in victory and even contributed a goal to make him the top scoring defender in Serie A this season.

CB: Ethan Ampadu (Leeds)

Daniel Farke couldn’t have asked for much more from his captain as Ampadu kept a comfortable clean sheet at Peterborough and even chipped in with two goals and an assist at the other end in Leeds’ 3-0 win.

RM: James McAtee (Sheffield United)

Two goals, an assist and the Man of the Match award make this one of the easiest inclusions for the side as Sheffield United notched a rare win for the books.

CM: Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona)

The beleaguered Blaugrana may have been facing fourth tier opposition but they still made life difficult, although one man who remained an oasis of calm throughout, continually starting attacks was the Dutch midfielder and much of his side’s best work all went through him. His class was evident.

CM: Carlos Benavídez (Alavés)

The Uruguayan earned what was just his fifth start of the season for the Copa del Rey clash with Real Betis, but may be in line for more after this performance. Not only was he tenacious and relentless off the ball throughout, he provided the moment of quality which won it with a sweet swept finish in the second half.

LM: Naatan Skyttä (Toulouse)

It may be a slight positional change to get him in but the 21-year-old must be included. Toulouse fans have been wondering why he hasn’t been in the team recently and with a two-goal show in the Coupe de France for the holders with his velvet left foot doing what it does best, the Finn has surely reclaimed a starting berth.

CAM: Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn)

The Championship’s top scorer was at it again in the FA Cup as the Rovers attacker netted a first senior hat-trick of his career to take his tally for the season to 19.

At long last, the Toon Army have a new derby hero to hail as their Swedish striker put rivals Sunderland to the sword at the Stadium of Light with his second half brace, calmly finishing from Miguel Almirón’s unselfish pass before netting a late penalty to seal his place in club folklore.

The PSG star seems completely unruffled by the latest onslaught of speculation regarding his future now that he is free to discuss a move with interested parties. On Sunday night, he focused his attention solely on matters on the field – much to the disappointment of Revel, who were victims of a hat-trick in his side’s 9-0 victory to make him the club’s all-time Coupe de France scorer.
